When I studied in Germany, in the winter, people held a cup of hot red wine, standing on the street and chatting with their friends. Same to this German culture, we all have the experience to warm hands with a cup of hot coffee or tea, the heat capacity of water is reletively high, so that using hot water to keep food warm might be a good idea. About material, by using porcelain instead of other materials because of its low thermal conductivity, it will not burn hands even if the bowl is fulled with hot water, meanwhile keeps a longer time to heat the food. More importantly, it can be used repeatedly by using china as well as it can heat in microwave.
